In this edited excerpt from his new memoir “Talking to Canadians,” Mercer remembers how it all began. It still holds the record as the most-watched comedy broadcast in Canadian television history, with 2.7 million viewers. Before the “Report,” where he travelled across the country talking to Canadians in celebration of their hometowns and cities, Mercer visited many places in America with a very different agenda, culminating in a one-hour comedy special “Talking to Americans,” a spin-off from a regular segment on CBC’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes.” The show aired on April 1, 2001. With his show “The Rick Mercer Report,” he pushed the boundaries further than he had before - with reporter-like stealth, approaching people and interviewing them - and seeing what he can get away with. Newfoundland comedian Rick Mercer has had Canadians laughing for years. He’s not able to go back, so he’s trapped in our time. So, they put Oscar Wilde’s book in there, and he comes out of it. The author of the book would be standing there at the age they had written the book. You put a book in the closet close the door and open the door. My first web comic was a comic called The Closest Story which was a story about a girl who owned a coffee shop that had a closet in the basement. Ukazu: It was my first big original project that I created. Was Check, Please! The first comic you ever wrote? Steele: I know you did a lot of fanart before Check, Please!, and you have your MFA. And, I love manga, all of like Tokyo Mew Mew was my first series. I remember reading just those huge Alex Ross trays that came out. Ngozi Ukazu: I really loved anything that had to do with the Justice League growing up. I had the opportunity to sit down with Ngozi Uzaku at New York Comic Con to talk about the amazing success of Check, Please!, the importance of fandom for marginalized creators, and her upcoming queer softball comic.Īmanda Steele: You’ve said you read comics and manga growing up? What were some of your favorites? There's something about having all nine of us together that makes a certain kind of energy radiate. As we pose, the cameras start clicking in a frenzy, catching us from all angles. We balance each other out, the tall girls and the shorter girls finding their spots in the formation so no one looks out of place. Like we've done a thousand times before, the girls assemble for the photo-each of us instinctively knowing where to stand so that our best features are shown off. "How about a group shot?" a photographer yells. Fans scream when they see us, clamoring to get closer through the wall of paparazzi. Mina is close at my heels, and seven girls emerge from the limo behind us, lifting their hands in queenlike waves. I subtly smooth down my outfit-a glittering wrap dress with a strapless sweetheart neckline-as I step onto the red carpet. Cameras flash in my direction before my champagne-colored stilettos have even touched the ground. Also, some of the dialogue and description seemed historically innaccurate\inauthentic. As well, the writing style seemed a little oversimplified at times, which is probably just my personal preference. The romance was slow and sweet and pure, just the way I like it.Ī couple of my quibbles: Eliza, as mentioned above. Fordham did a fabulous job with that subject. I feel like so many romances put such weight on the physical and often forget inner beauty entirely. The story, while a bit slow at times, was heartwarming and enthralling. There are more effective ways to show the contrast, in my opinion. I see why she was necessary to show how Em was different, but I feel like Eliza ended up being unrealistic. I also loved the secondary cast of Mae and Milly, Margaret, and the Howells, with the exception of Eliza. I loved their sweet relationship, easy banter, and lighthearted competition. Wow! A fabulous debut from Rachel Fordham!īoth the cover and the description had me hooked when I first saw this on Netgalley, and I'm so glad I decided to read it! It was so lovely to step into this simply-written small-town historical story with heart-melting characters, a sweet romance, and even gun-toting outlaws.īoth Caleb and Em were unique and realistic MCs with so much depth to their characters.
